Storytelling painting
People like you and me, living with dementia. Sarah painted their portraits, with their families' permission, and wrote a book about it.
From her background in elderly care, Sarah developed the method Verhalen Schilderen, storytelling painting. She painted portraits of residents of care homes in Meppel, including people from Kaailanden and the Irenehuis, and gave painting workshops in people's homes and in nursing homes. RTV Drenthe, RTV Meppel, the Meppeler Courant and the Dagblad van het Noorden wrote and broadcast about it.
The portraits from the series The lost human were published with the families' permission and can be seen in the gallery. Two books about the project were published by Boekscout (in Dutch): Verhalen Schilderen, Eerst de mens, dan dementie (2018) and Verhalen Schilderen, Thuiskomen door de mist van dementie (2020). Both can be ordered directly from Boekscout and bought at bookshop Riemer Barth in Meppel, and through bookshops throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.
