The story behind this work
I deliberately painted this portrait of a woman looking away in sepia tones. Beneath this painting lies another portrait, one I made on commission. The girl I had painted had passed away. I was given the freedom to paint her as I had envisaged it, but that was probably too intense for the clients. This portrait is an expression of my sadness and disappointment. But also a confirmation for myself that I must follow my feelings.
