Beneath the Watchful Moon

The story behind this work

Beneath the watchful moonlight, wisdom, strength and longing come together. The woman in her satin dress stands as a symbol for women all over the world. The owl on her hands represents wisdom and intuition. That the bird stays with her, while a free forest waits beyond the window, refers to the oppression of women and the freedom that many still have to go without.

The wolf stands for strength, freedom and togetherness. The deep bond between people and animals plays an important part in my life and is an essential source of inspiration for this work. In the background, the windmill and the water refer to my Frisian roots. The night and the full moon have fascinated me since childhood. They evoke a sense of mystery, as if another world lies hidden behind the visible reality.

This painting is a tribute to the wisdom and resilience of women, to the freedom every human being is entitled to, and to the bond between people, animals and nature.
